You build big houses, erect large doors
Sons**! You were happy to live
When death came, you stood perplexed
It is true, upon holy feet of grandguru* who lived
on poison and the mother
—Siddhar Sivavakkiyar Hymn (022)
* Since Sivavakkiyar has disclaimed the existence of Lord Shiva in
many of his hymns (verse
9), it could either be considered as ‘one God’ irrespective of chunking
them into various forms, or in siddhars' tradition, it could be aptly called as
immortals, or grand gurus who lived on poisons owing to their kayakalpam doses, which seems to be very much
applicable, as siddhars have always revered to their gurus as gods, and they
have lived in tune with them harmoniously, one with their hearts. In the verse
31, this state has been explained clearly.
Kayakalpam—Science of creating an imperishable body by taking in well formulated
poisons periodically, in mild dosages, thus increasing body immunity, vigor and
endurance to great levels, enough and more to withstand drastic natural
conditions and venomous bites of animals, insects and reptiles, especially
during deep samadhis and penance. That was the level of incomparable love,
Siddhars had for being one with God and nature.
